See ya later England, back to the States I go.

Today is my last day in England, and I’m really sad. I had such a great time studying abroad here. I learned so much, met a lot of great people, and traveled too. Some of my favorite parts of this trip were visiting family, of course going to Paris and Rome but also all the trips the school provided. I had a blast on the London River Cruise and even though the weather for Stonehenge & Bath wasn’t the best, it was still a great experience. I’m also happy I got to go to Oxford, Windsor, and Eton. It was on my to do list to visit Oxford University, and it was everything I hoped it would be. I learned a lot in my class and now have a greater appreciation for psychology. The University of Sussex as a whole was great. I never thought I could come to like such a small school, but it did have many advantages. I loved the pub on campus, the convenient buses, everything being really close, getting to do psych studies (and getting paid), and how they made us feel comfortable here.

I learned a lot while being abroad, mostly about myself which was unexpected. I definitely feel that I reached a new level of maturity. On this trip I realized early that I had to always have my things in check, and I wasn’t going to be an exception at any point. I learned this after missing my flight to Rome and none of the workers cared AT ALL. Not after we begged, pleaded, cried, complained, not after ANYTHING. Lesson learned: I will never have such a carefree attitude about flying again. I will always read my travel documents well in advance, and always be extra on time for everything, no matter what. I was definitely worried about my ability to mange my money. I’m not the best when it comes to money. I have money one second and the next second I wondered where it all went. After I realized everything was way more expensive than I thought, I always kept up with my finances. I hope this carries over for when I return back to school. While being abroad, your basically on your own. At least at school its easier to contact your family if you need something, but here not so much. I’m glad I got to experience being soooo far away from home and having to work out all my problems on my own. I definitely feel more comfortable being on my own which is a great thing. I also learned it’s great to take time to yourself. After a stressful day or even if you wake up in a bad mood, its always a good a idea to take a much needed break and just relax. I spent a few afternoons and nights just walking in Brighton, taking time to think, plan, and just relax. It’s such a refreshing feeling and better than being on the computer. Lastly, I learned to not complain about insignificant things. I complained a lot about the weather, everything being expensive, and just meaningless stuff. I realize how fortunate I am to have had this opportunity to go abroad. After seeing the many homeless people, especially in Rome I realized that everything that went wrong during my trip is nothinggg compared to what those people go through. I feel blessed everyday that I am able to live such a great life, and I will never take that for granted again. To sum it all up I hope to continue to live life the best way I can and do away with the petty complaints, drama, and unnecessary things I have let in lately. What’s most important is to just LIVE. And that’s exactly what I’ll do.

My coach leaves at 4:00am, so I should be out of my dorm around 2:30am. I will be writing to you next from Philly, and then finally when I get back to State College on Sunday night. I wish everyone safe travels for whoever is coming home! So long England, it has been a pleasure. I’m sure I’ll be back one day! Cheers!

1 day left!

Omg! I can’t believe it, tomorrow is my last day in Brighton. Wow, these last 4 weeks at the University of Sussex flew by. This is definitely a bittersweet feeling. There’s a lot of things I am going to miss about England, but at the same time there were a few things I didn’t like…

Things I’ll miss about England (in no particular order)
1. accents
2. english tea at anytime of the day
3. the gorgeous houses and small cars
4. small portion sizes
5. the co-operative food
6. the drinking age of 18
7. the delicious chocolate
8. the scenery
9. primark
10. fish & chips

Things I wont miss ( in no particular order)
1. seagulls
2. the currency (pound)
3. 60 degree weather in July
4. everything closing so early
5. converting the Celsius to Fahrenheit
6. paying for public restrooms

Today I spent most of my day in Brighton. I went to a lot of the little shops, walked on the pier, did some souvenier shopping, and just explored. Tomorrow I plan to do the same, starting with getting English Tea and cakes at a place called the Mock Turtle Tea Room. I also need to get a few last minute gifts, hopefully they fit in my already way to haeavy suitcase. ahhhh! we shall see. CHeeeeRRRRssss!

Weekend in Paris!

Ahhh! I wanted to blog earlier, but I have been so busy with school work and getting things ready to head home on Saturday πŸ™ This past weekend was spent in Paris, and it was amazing! I can’t believe I was actually there it all seems so surreal now. I stayed in Aloha Hostel, which was definitely not what was was expecting. My hostel in Rome was perfect, it was clean, close to the metro/buses, the workers were nice and helpful, and secure. Now this hostel was the dirtiest place i have ever been in my entire life. I wish i could tell you the frightening things I saw but it’s just wayy to gross to even talk about. On that note, please avoid this hostel. They did have free Internet access and crepes so that was a plus haha. Me and my friend Terry, who I went with had dinner at a really delicious Thai place on Friday night and just walked around and enjoyed the scenery. On Saturday we went on a 3.5 hr free walking tour. It was great because we got to see all the major sites. Paris is great because they have so many places you can grab a quick bite to eat and that’s what we usually did. We had dinner Saturday at a cute little restaurant. One of my most favorite parts was the incredible pastries! they were sooooo good. I miss it already. My plan is to hunt down a pastry shop in State College and I will go there everyday!! So it sum it all up, though my time in Paris was short it was amazing! I’m so happy that everything worked out great especially with traveling. Check out the pics!

End of Week 2.

Week #2 is officially over and it was definitely super eventful. On Tuesday night I went to karaoke at a pub called King and Queen it was a lot of fun and I’m hoping to go back tomorrow night. Thursday night I went to the Brighton Beach and Pier and also to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt 1 for free at the Odeon Theater and then the premier of pt 2 at 12:00am. The movie was amazing, and I can’t believe its over πŸ™ On Saturday I went to Oxford, Windsor, and Eton through Discovery Tours. Windsor Castle was gorgeous, Eton was the cutest little town, and my favorite was Oxford. We got a tour of the campus and even got to see all the locations that were used for the Harry Potter films! On Sunday I went with the school to Stonehenge and Bath. Unfortunately, it was raining so hard once we got to Stonehenge we took our pictures and ran back to the bus. Once we got to Bath the rain stopped and the day there was fun.

My first paper for class is due tomorrow, and I just finished it and printed it out. Wednesday is my presentation, and then my final paper is due the last day of class. The days are flying by. I can’t believe I’m already on the third week of classes.

Last week the weather was awful. It was cold and rainy everyday and it looks like it’s going to be the same weather again this week. I really don’t understand how people can live here year round with this terrible weather. I’m looking forward to the summer sun when I get back to the states and Coldstone πŸ™‚ Also, for everything not to be soooo expensive.

This week I’m hoping to explore Brighton a little more and go to different pubs and clubs downtown as my days here are dwindling. I’m looking forward to this weekend when me and my friend Terry are going to Paris. I’m so excited, I know it’s going to be amazing!

Cheers.

Life at Sussex!

Life so far at Sussex has been great.  Here are some words I have come across while living here:

Trousers= Pants
Loo Roll= Toilet Paper
Fob= It grants you access to your building, kind of like your id card in the dorms (except this thing is wayyyy cooler)
Cheers= thank you or goodbye (it’s usually said at the end of a conversation)
Bap= I think its like a breakfast sandwich or something like it
Blackcurrant= it’s like berries?? i think (i tasted it in a drink called Ribena)
Queue= Line (one of my favorites)
Notes= Bills
Jumper= Sweater
Lolly= Lollipop

I participated in the International summer school Pub Crawl last Thursday it was a lot of fun. What i noticed was that no one carded me, even though I look like I’m 12. Also all the brands of beers they had were very unfamiliar except Heineken and Guinness. On Saturday I went through the school to London on a walking tour and river cruise. It was a lot of fun, I got to visit all the major sites and got so many great pictures. Tomorrow I will be headed to the pub on campus for karaoke night, Thursday night at 12:00am is the harry potter pt 2 premier, Saturday I might go to Oxford, Windsor, and Eton through discovery tours (still thinking about that one), and then Sunday off to Stonehenge for the day. bussssssssy.

Class has been going great, this week a lot of people are presenting projects. I go next Wednesday, and mine is on Gender Roles. We also have a paper due next Tuesday that I’m currently working on. It has to be 1000 words and I have about 860 so I’m getting there. Well I’m off to make dinner and watch some YouTube videos my friend Terry suggested.

Cheers.

University of Sussex!

So it was been a couple days but I’m finally settled in and already had my second day of class. I love Brighton. The town is cute and there are so many shops. I have been down to Churchill Square twice already doing shopping and I just got here Sunday haha. I should probably stop before my bank account reaches 0. What I noticed about downtown that made me laugh was that they have a “RFC” which sells chicken just like “KFC”, and they have a TK Maxx just like “TJ Maxx” haha it is really weird. Today I got tickets for the harry potter premiere next Thursday. I can’t waitttttt! They are even showing pt 1 at the movie theater for free at 9pm the same day πŸ™‚ that’s a bonus because I haven’t seen it yet. Tomorrow a lot of the international summer school students are going on a pub crawl, I’m excited for that as well.

As for classes I like mine so far. It is 3 hrs but so far she has let us out really early. The class is really interesting its mostly discussion based which is cool because lecturing gets really boring. So far the only thing I don’t like is the weather, I packed all the wrong clothes and I had to go out and buy a jacket, it is freezing here. πŸ™ It’s July why must it be like this? Hopefully it gets better…or I’ll cry.

i hate Delta!

I haven’t been able to write due to inconsistent internet access. But I finally made it to Brighton by the way. I left on June 25th for London to visit me aunt. I flew with Delta and they lost my luggage, then the took my carry on because there was no more over head room and left it in the rain. I have never been more upset. I got my luggage back the next day, which was great but they ended up basically breaking my suite-case. =( EPIC FAIL. So on Tuesday me and my friend terry were suppose to embark on our 3 night stay in Roma. Apparently on Ryan Air you need to get a specific stamp to board the plane if you are not a UK resident. I did not get that stamp and by the time I reached the gate they wouldn’t let me in. We ended up getting the stamp by the help of lots of kind people, but made it to the gate like two minutes late and wasn’t allowed to board. So we missed our flight and had to rebook it. We were told to fly out of a different airport that was located three hours away. So we had to purchase a new ticket and a coach ticket for a total of οΏ½130. I was seriously soooo offended. After all that struggle of sleeping in the airport, waking up for a flight at 6:00am, we made it to Roma and it was beautiful. We went to the Spanish steps, Trevi Fountain, Coliseum and more. The food was superb and all the people were extremely friendly. We even got to go to a pub crawl and met a lot of awesome people.

Things about Roma:

1. Don’t even look at the people trying to sell you things on the street they will stalk your life
2. Pigeons are the worst
3. The Fanta, Sprite, and Nestea taste different (at least I think so)
4. The buses will squeeze in as many people as possible, and it is not fun
5. It is the fire of a thousand suns there
6. It is extra hard to find something that comes close to a Walmart or Target

pictures are coming soon! and my first day in Brighton! πŸ™‚

21 days!

I’m getting so pumped for England!! A few days ago I got my class schedule and I have class T, W, R 9-12pm. I love it because its not super early and I have the rest of the day to myself. Next week I’m going to book trips to Paris and Rome πŸ™‚ It still doesn’t really feel like I’m going but I know when I start packing it’s going to hit me.

I can’t wait to just walk around and enjoy the scenery. Hopefully my first meal is something new and exciting. Not a single second will be wasted. Sleep? who needs sleep, I will sleep when I get back to State College.

T- Minus 39 days until England!

Hey everyone! My name is Anita Anim. I am a senior at Penn State majoring in Nutritional Sciences with a minor in Kinesiology. I am originally from Northeast Philadelphia, and I will be studying abroad in Brighton, UK for summer 2011. I will be taking Childhood Development at the University of Sussex and I’m so excited. So far the plan is I’m headed to England on June 24rd, before the actual program date which is July 4th. My roommate Terry is also coming with me and we plan on staying with my aunt. At that time we were thinking about traveling to Rome and staying in a hostel for a couple nights. One of our other friends will be in Italy (Florence) at the same time, so hopefully we can visit her as well.

I have heard a lot of great things about Brighton, from stalking random websites and from a friend who has studied abroad there. Not only can’t I wait to discover all that Brighton has to offer, but to travel to other surrounding places such as London, Paris, and hopefully Barcelona! Also, maybe some other spur of the moment trips, once I start traveling I might not be able to stop.

I am so excited to experience something new and have the time of my life. I hope to make many new friends, learn a lot in my class, have a new perspective on life, and become more culturally rounded.  I plan to buy lots of new stuff, try the craziest foods possible, volunteer, and hopefully not come back with a negative balance in my bank account. Fingers Crossed.
