One Week

So so so so so sorry I have not been writing/photo-updating!  Finals are crazy!

So, I’m just going to write about Italy and not photoblog about it, because I don’t have time to photoblog right now.

We flew into Milan and slept in the airport night #1 in order to save money, because hostels in Milan are CRAZY EXPENSIVE.  Just like the rest of the city.  Everything was very elegant and there were just dozens of designer stores everywhere.  We explored a bit, got some solid gelato, and wandered around a big flea market.  There really isn’t too much to do except shop in Milan, so we headed to our hostel in Genova a bit earlier than expected.  HELPFUL HINT:  We had a ton of luggage for our trip, and we didn’t want to lug it around Milan all day.  SO we ended up storing it at the train station for very cheap.  I highly suggest doing that if you aren’t checking into your hostel right away when you are traveling.  That was awesome.

Anyway, Genova was sweet.  It was SO HIGH UP.  The roads are very narrow and windy.  Seriously the craziest bus rides ever.  But the view from our hostel was spectacular.  And we went out to dinner and got some delicious pizzas (the first of many we would get on this trip).  We left Genova early in the morning to get our train to Monterosso in Cinque Terre.  We arrived and it was BEAUTIFUL.  We stayed in an apartment than an American girl and her Italian boyfriend owned.  It was awesome.  There were 6 of us total, so it was a little tight, but our view was spectacular and we had a grape vine and a lemon tree (AWESOME).  It was also very close to everything (though the towns are very small, so unless you are halfway up the mountain, everything is rather close).  We were beach bums most of the time.  On my 21st birthday, I decided to do a 3 hour hike into the next town with my friend Brittany. HELL OF A HIKE.  Holy hiking, seriously.  It was the scenic route since all of the coastal trails were closed due to rock slides and such in the winter.  And it was HARD.  But we made it to the other town, and saw some incredible views.  We also went out for a full 3 course Italian meal on my birthday.  SO GOOD.  Then we passed out (hell of a birthday, huh? haha).  The rest of the week we explored more of the towns, hiked some more, and laid on the beach.  Our town was by far the best town out of the 5…mostly because we had a huge beach and they didn’t have any.  I don’t know what you would do there without a beach, really.

So. Came home from Italy on Easter.  Started to prep for finals.  Have had my Irish Music and Dance, Geoscience, and Irish Folklore exams so far.  I only have one left, and it is for my Psychology course…and it is on a Saturday (really?! Saturday exams? That sucks).

I am also very torn about coming home.  I want to see all of my friends from home. A lot. I miss them so so so so so so so so much.  But I don’t want to leave my housemates and friends here.  But I am INCREDIBLY sick of the immaturity level of Irish people.  The series of events that have led me to hate Irish people:

1.  These kids were in my house one night and threw my shoes out of my house.  MY NICE RUNNING SHOES.  And I found one in the neighbors bush the next morning. But the other is nowhere to be found. Thanks for that.
2.  That same night, my friend Katie and I were getting kebabs before going to the pub.  Katie gets hers and pays for it, and this Irish guy literally takes it right out of her hands and runs away with it. Her response, “MY KEBABBBBBBBB!!”  But…really? REALLY? It’s 5 euro. You can’t get your own damn kebab?
3. Someone stole my housemate’s student ID card.  They checked out a book at the library then returned the card. So now she’s receiving all of these emails saying she owes money for this book she didn’t check out (late fees). And she’s going to end up paying for the damn book.
4. Someone broke into my friend’s house one night while we were all hanging out and broke the “break in case of fire” box.  250 euro fine.  STUPID.
5.  Eggs. People throw eggs everywhere. DISGUSTING. GROW UP.
6.  I was walking home happy to be back in Ireland after a trip, and these guys drive by in an SUV and pull out a giant super-soaker…and I get soaked (good thing the name rings true to its outcome, huh?).

I am so lucky to have awesome housemates and friends, cause if I was stuck purely with college-aged Irish kids, I would be pissed off.  My best Irish friend here is 28 years old. Go figure.

So. Yeah. One week til I go back to the states. The first thing I am going to do is go to several doctor’s appointments, because Ireland has destroyed my immune system.  Then I am going to go to Fatheads in Pittsburgh, order a bangin’ sandwich with their homemade french fries and ask for a vat of ranch dressing.  Seriously. Why don’t they have ranch in Europe?!

Might do one more entry before I leave, depending on my time constraints.  Packing is NOT going to be fun.

Cheers,
Melanie

Oh, PS. I also won a photo competition at UL for my photos in Ireland.  Won a hoodie and 40 euro (could have taken 80 euro, but the hoodie is pretty cool. haha). SO YAY!

London/Ring of Kerry/Sweden/21st Birthday

I have been hardcore slacking on the blog train lately.  Sorry about that!

^Our hostel was based out of a bar…aka reception was at the bar…which I had never seen before.  Thus, making this 11am drink well worth it.  Cool place.

OFF TO SWEDEN!
Went to visit one of my best friends, Claire, in Sweden.  She moved there last year and is living in Uppsala.  All I wanted to do was spend time with her and see the ice bar in Stockholm.  Mission accomplished.

BIRTHDAY BIRTHDAY BIRTHDAY!
Both Erin and my birthday was over our Spring break, so we decided to celebrate beforehand, while everyone was still around.  We were VIP at the one club here, Angel Lane, which landed us free champagne and the club to ourselves for the first two hours.  What a wonderful night with wonderful people! :]

So there is that mad update.  Sincerely sorry I haven’t written in ages, but with essays and finals all around me, other things have trumped blogging.
I spent the past 10 days in Italy for spring break…and that calls for a blog of its own (hopefully it will go up within the next two days).
That is all for now!
Cheers,
Melanie

Quick Update

Everything has been a bit hectic lately. Traveling, essay writing, and classes are kicking my butt right now.

Two weekends ago I was in London.  It was a beautiful weekend.  Our hostel was amazing, and we met some pretty cool people.  My favorite part was the Harry Potter tour and the Duck Tour (seriously, if you haven’t ever done a Duck Tour, do it! Totally worth it).
This past weekend I was in the Ring of Kerry, and again, the weather was incredible.  We went to some cliffs, the beach, learned how to play Gaelic football, etc.  I will do two separate posts for photographs, I just need to write this one essay first.  I leave for Sweden on Thursday, so I have to get this essay done by (hopefully) Tuesday night.  Then I have a project I need to start, as well.  Phew.
Then it’s Sweden, final, Italy, final, final, final, week, home.
TIME IS SERIOUSLY FLYING.
Oh, and I also wanted to start some sort of list for words they use here:
1. Savage
2. Grand
3. Langers (drunk)
4. Thanks a million
5. Ending sentences with “like” — “I was at the gym, like.”
6. Cheers (thank you)
7. Alright, love. Thanks, love. LOVELOVELOVE.
8. Biscuit = cookie
9. Chips = fries
10. “Tree” = 3. (My conversation with an Irish guy went like this: “Say three.” “Tree.” “Okay, what is that tall thing growing out of the ground?” “A tree.” “Exactly.”)
I will add to the list later :]
Cheers,
Melanie

St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin

I traveled to Dublin with a bus full of eager international students on Thursday morning. We arrived in Dublin around 10am, and the festivities began!  It was beautiful outside all day, and I had awesome friends to hang out with :]

As usual, photo blog!

All dressed up!

My irish breakfast! Om nom!

Some fun drunk guys at the parade!

The parade has some interesting floats…

See what I mean?

Cutest little girl everrrr.

SO MANY PEOPLE!!!

Guinness Factory!

Enjoying our free Guinness at the Gravity Bar!

So, the rest of the night was a little bit nuts.  We went to a handful of pubs.  There were so many people out. It was, pardon my French, a bit of a shit show.  But, I suppose that’s what makes Paddy’s day, huh?
Apart from Paddy’s, been working on some more essays.  Only have two left (one due this Thursday…one due in April).  Going to London this weekend!  DEFINITELY hitting up that Harry Potter tour.  Other than that?  Who knows! haha.
Cheers,
Melanie

Adventures in Paris!

Last weekend I visited Paris!  It is a beautiful city, and we got a lot done in the two full days we had to explore.

Photo blog!

It was a beautiful day! Bright blue sky :]

It was just lovely.

I liked these guys.

We then moved on to the Catacombs, which was AWESOME. Seriously killer. No pun intended…

Some interesting architecture inside.

This was the line to get into the Catacombs. Nuts!

We then went to the Jardin de Luxembourg. It got a little bit gloomy outside :[

Statue in the park.

My inner child had to come out at some point!

Finished the day at the Pantheon.

Gorgeous!

Got up bright and early to go to the Louvre!

My favorite exhibit was the Napoleon exhibit. So elegant.

CHAOS at the Mona Lisa. Not worth it.

Totally rode an ostrich on the carousel.

Just wandering in another park.

Checked out Notre Dame.

Went to this cute cafe for lunch. Seriously the best meal. Ever.

FINALLY the Eiffel Tower!

BIGGEST THING OF COTTON CANDY EVERRR! (They call it candy floss here…which is weird.)

Tourists. Duh.

Photoshop at its finest!

View from the top!

View from the top on another side!

Night shot. It sparkles once an hour. I love it.

So that was Paris!  I had a blast. Good times with good people. Always.

I have been working on essays for midterms recently.  Finished my first one, about to start my second.  Have three due total.  Wah.

I went to the cinema last week!  I think I sound very proper when I call it the cinema, but that is what they call it here.  Saw No Strings Attached.  Loved it.  Ashton Kutcher never disappoints. hah.

I also went to the milk market on Saturday.  They have it every weekend, and it was AWESOME.  So much good stuff.  Almost bought a puppy. ALMOST. But I bought what is the best apple juice I have ever had and probably will ever have.  It is a blueberry apple juice made from the apples and blueberries of Ireland. DELICIOUS!  I also had a cookie and a piece of cake (go ahead, make your fat jokes!).  They had so much CHEESE, too.  Yum yum yum yum yum!

I watched an American football game yesterday.  The guy I’m seeing here is the quarterback, so I went to watch them demolish the other team.  I honestly couldn’t tell you what the score was…it had to have been in the high 50s or 60s to 6.  It’s funny, because they NEVER go for field goals.  They always do two point conversions when they get a touchdown and just either go for it on fourth down or punt.  Weird, right?

Went out with the roommates last night and had a blast.  We went to a place called Hurlers where we’d never been before. It was a pretty chill place…I’d go back. hah.

Time is flying. I can’t believe I leave in two months.  Sadface.

Cheers,
Melanie

I SURVIVED RAG WEEK 2011!

Okay, so if you read my last post, you knew that last week was Rag Week (UL’s big charity week).

Well, I survived!

Major things I did:
1.  Jelly Wrestled (not exactly as it sounds…my roommate and I pretty much just played in jello water…).
2.  Rode the mechanical bull (and I wasn’t half-bad).
3.  Bungee Jumped (yeah, that happened).

The campus was pretty tight on security.  No one was allowed in your village unless they lived there.  You had to show your student ID upon entry to the courtyards where everything was happening.  Etc.

I was really bummed because the Rubberbandits were supposed to put on a show on Thursday night, but they were “sick,” so they are trying to reschedule it.  Hrrmph.

Went to Paris this past weekend, but that deserves a different post.  Just wanted to throw out this quick update.

^There’s me bungee jumping and flailing around like an idiot :]

^Jelly wrestling fun!

Cheers,
Melanie

My Campus is Beautiful

I took the time on Saturday to explore all that my campus had to offer.  There is a river that runs on the outer part of UL and a path you can follow.  I did just that.

Photo Blog!

Pretty, right?

Saturday night, I went on a date! hah.  We went mini-golfing, which was a blast.  Their mini-golf place was inside, and the courses were intense.  No windmills or anything…it was actually like I was putting on a green. I know, right?  And there was nothing stopping the ball from rolling right into the water! That only happened to me once, I swear.  But then he took me to a pub with a live band, then to a club.  AND I got my first kebab (their version , that is).  Om nom. Delicious.

This week is their Charity Week (AKA Rag Week).  Things are going to get intense.  I will definitely be updating throughout the week about that.

Paris this weekend. Dublin next weekend.  London the weekend after that.  WOO.

I am also starting to write a good amount of essays.  That’s what they do for their midterms.  Dislike.

Holy Rugby

I went to my first Rugby game on Friday night.  The game was Munster (my team!) vs. Edinburgh.  Munster won!

Let me tell you, the men who play this game are TOUGH.  They don’t wear any type of protection and play pretty much the whole game without stopping.  Talk about a manly man’s sport.  It was tough trying to learn the rules at first, but I caught on rather quickly.

Photos!  All except for the first were taken by my friends, because I didn’t want to bring my nice cameras in the rain.

Rugby^The stadium is pretty new. And awesome.

Rugby 2^Intense.  I believe we scored after this.

Rgby 3^Action shot.

Went to a dubstep show last night, which ended up being three different DJs in the three different rooms at a place called Dolan’s.  It was a little bit nuts, but a ton of fun.

This weekend has been really relaxing.  Trying to decide where I want to go next weekend.

Cheers,
Melanie

Waffles, Chocolate, and Beer — My Trip to Brussels

This past weekend, a few of us traveled to Brussels for some fun.

The flight there was fine, as was the bus ride to the train station, but once we arrived at the train station EVERYTHING was in French.  (None of us speak French.) We were told to take the tram to the Noord (North) side of Brussels to get to our hostel, but it took us 1.  15 minutes to find where the tram was.  2.  15 minutes to buy our tickets (apparently, you cannot use more than 30 coins to purchase tickets…and we tried buying all 7 tickets at the same time.  We had 31 coins.  Failwhale). The tram was also way packed.  I’ve been on subways before in NYC, and I thought that was bad.  No, Belgium tram = lots and lots and lots of people.

We got to our hostel, and the hostel was fabulous.  It was super-retro and colorful and clean!  Yay for a good first hostel experience!  :]  We were on the third floor in a private 4-bed room.  The floors, however, were odd.  We walked up at least 6 flights of stairs to get to our room. Awesome workout.

I was also extremely relieved to be back in Ireland where they speak English :]

Photo blog below to describe the rest of the trip:

^Our hostel had a disco ball. Awesome? Yes. So awesome.

^First waffle!

^Awesome architecture.

^Drain? Pretty cool.

^Lots of street musicians. WHY IS THE GUITAR SO BIGGG?!

^The peeing boy. I was not impressed.

^The best bar in the city, Delirium. You got coconuts if you bought banana or coconut beer. hah. They had, I believe, over 2000 types of beer there. Awesome.

^Statue in a courtyard.

^Meagan wooing a statue.

^They had some AWESOME graffiti.

^Last waffle in Belgium. OM NOM NOM.

I am going to a Munster rugby game this Friday!  I am excited :]

Melanie

Cliffs of Moher and Other Adventures

I’ve been really sick lately, and it sucks.  I suppose it was inevitable, though.  I always get sick with a change of environment.

This past Saturday, we took a tour through the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, the Ailwee Caves, and Bunratty Castle.

Photo blog, hoorah!

^Cliffs of Moher

^Castle at the Cliffs of Moher

^Cliffs of Moher

^Me at the gift shop at the Cliffs of Moher. hah.

^The Burren. Kinda cool lookin’, yeah?

^Roommates at the Burren.

^Ailwee Caves. Pretty cool. They turned the lights completely out and you couldn’t even see your hand in front of your face. A bit commercialized, but still fun.

^Self-explanatory.

^Roomie shot again.

^We found a phone booth! :]

Also, I went to a pub Sunday night to watch the Superbowl.  Being from Pittsburgh, I was really rooting for my Steelers.  The rest of the pub, however, was on Green Bay’s side.  I’m not quite sure why the Irish like Green Bay, but it was really embarrassing losing…and it was not fun being harassed all night.  Over-all experience?  Horrible.  Hah.  Never again.

Other than that one bad night, I am starting to really love everyone here.  Time is flying by.  Ut oh.

Cheers,
Melanie
