Ireland Awaits!

Hello Everyone!!
2012-08-23 13.36.17.jpgMy name is Kelly Suter and this is my first blog entry!  I am very excited to keep you all up to date about my upcoming adventures in Ireland and my travels through Europe!  First, I will tell you a little about myself.  I am a junior psychology major and human development and family studies minor at Penn State, University Park.  I’m actively involved with research on campus through my work in the Context and Development lab in the department of psychology.  I have also been involved in THON through committees and organizations in my time at Penn State so far.  I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area and I live there now with my family.  I love to cook, run, read, and spend lots of time with family and friends.  I live close to many of my extended family members, so I have been lucky to grow up with a big, crazy, fun family around me.

When I came to college, I knew that studying abroad was something that I definitely wanted to do.  When it came time to choose a place to go I was overwhelmed at the options I had before me!  I could go anywhere in the world.  After lots of research and reflection, I settled on Europe, and then chose Dublin, Ireland as my study abroad location.  I couldn’t be more excited!  Living in Europe I will have so many opportunities to travel to other countries.  Also, Ireland is very special to me because I have family ties there.   My grandfather was born there and came to America when he was 16-years-old.  I am looking forward to seeing where he came from and to get an idea of what his childhood was like in addition to meeting some of my family who live in Ireland and England.  Dublin will also be a great place to spend my semester because it will be a very different experience and lifestyle from Penn State.  I am excited to try out living and going to school in the city and taking in all of what Dublin has to offer.

I am very excited and a little bit nervous about the trip.  I am leaving for Dublin in 5 days and right now I’m busy making sure I am prepared and have all the things I need.  I have never traveled anywhere on my own so this will be a very new experience for me!  I can’t wait for everything to begin.  I will be blogging frequently so I can share my experiences with you!

Have a safe and happy new year!  Next time I will write from Dublin!

This past weekend, I went on my second trip out of the country, to a place that I have been longing to go to for years… IRELAND!!!

View from PlaneI am 50% Irish and I was an Irish Step Dancer for almost eight years, so naturally I had to go visit the homeland. So, my friend Phil and I left a rainy Barcelona early Friday morning and arrived in sunny, beautiful Dublin.

As soon as we checked into our hostel, we decided to head to the center of town to get some lunch. As luck would have it, we happened to choose the same restaurant that some of our friends were at, so we ate with them then decided to go to the Guinness Storehouse together for a tour of the factory. It was very similar to the Heineken factory that I went to when I was in Amsterdam, but interesting itself all the same. The best part was the 360-degree view of the city that was at the end of the tour of the storehouse. It was the top most floor of the building, and offered breathtaking views of the entire city.

As we made our way back to the hostel, we passed the beautiful Christ Church Cathedral, which was founded in 1028, and St. Audoen’s Church, which was built in 1190 and is Dublin’s Oldest Medieval Parish Church. After a quick nap at the hostel, we went out for the night with our friends on a pub-crawl, and had a fabulous first night in Dublin.

The next morning, Phil, our friend Hendrik and I set out on a mission to get to Kilmainham Gaol, a jail from 1796, but on the way found the National Museum of Ireland of Decorative Arts and History, so we decided to go in a look around. This museum is housed in an old army barracks, so it was HUGE! Inside we saw some cool things from the history of Ireland, such as old army uniforms and equipment, old scientific instruments, furniture, and clothing. My favorite part was the exhibition of ancient stone crosses, which had crosses that were over 1,000 years old.

After the museum (and quite a lengthy walk), we finally made it to Kilmainham Gaol. This old jail housed many common criminals, but also those that were involved in rebellions against the British when Ireland was owned and controlled by Great Britain. Although some parts such as the floorboards and metal grates have been restored, it was really interesting to see a jail from so long ago.

After visiting the jail we made our way to Trinity College, whose beautiful campus sits in the middle of the city. We then made our way through the city center to the incredible Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, a sight that I refused to leave Dublin without seeing. Unfortunately it was quite dark once we finally got there, but this glorious cathedral was mighty and beautiful all the same. Afterwards, we met friends at Ireland’s oldest pub, The Brazen Head, which has been there since 1198!

Although it was short-lived, I loved my weekend in Dublin. If I would have known how much I was going to love Ireland, I would have planned my trip for a longer weekend, and I would have travelled to other areas of the country such as Galway, Belfast, and Cork. Since I didn’t get the opportunity to see these places, now I have an excuse to go back again!!

Ireland

Ireland was totally worth it. Some might say Dublin is just like London but I disagree. In Dublin the people are more friendly not that they aren’t in London, they’re just not as polite as Dubliners.  In my opinion the people of a city or town can have an effect on how much tourist and alike enjoy that location.  In Dublin from the tour guides to the people working at the pubs were about as friendly as people from the south in America. It seems they both have a very hospitable mindset towards others.

The first day there we saw Queen Elizabeth! They shut down the main roads in Dublin so she could drive though and we saw her! Some of the people didn’t care one bit, others protested her visit because of the country’s past relationship.

I think it’s ironic that I’ve been in England for 5 months and went to the Royal Wedding but didn’t see the Queen yet my first day in Dublin I see her!

I spent my time in Ireland with my boyfriend, Jamie, who came to visit for 10 days, five of which were in Dublin. We went on a Wild Wicklow tour which took us through many small villages south of Dublin (including where Bono lives), all through the Wicklow  Mountains (where part of Brave heart and P.S. I love you were filmed), and Glendalough.  Going through the mountains was the best part. The views were just incredible and aren’t like going through mountains in the States.

Jamie and I also took the FREE Sandeman’s Walking Tour and now I probably know more history of Dublin than Canterbury, were I’m studying.  The Sandeman’s tours covered Dublin Castle, Dubh Linn, Dublin’s Medieval Walls, Viking Remains,  Norman Dublin, Georgian Dublin, Christ Church Cathedral,  Adam and Eve Church, The National Library, Famous Writers, Temple Bar, U2 – Origins of the rock legend, Ha’Penny Bridge, Spire of Dublin, City Hall, Trinity College, Leinster House, Chester Beatty, Library, St. Stephen’s Green,  1916 Easter Rising.

I also did this company’s tour in Paris and it was just as good and informative. I highly recommend it.

We also went to the Guinness Brewery. Turns out I like Guinness which I did not expect. It is a self guided tour and you learn about the history, making of beer and how the processes have advanced. We got our ‘free perfectly poured pint’ at the top of the brewery in the 360 Bar.

St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin

I traveled to Dublin with a bus full of eager international students on Thursday morning. We arrived in Dublin around 10am, and the festivities began!  It was beautiful outside all day, and I had awesome friends to hang out with :]

As usual, photo blog!

All dressed up!

SO MANY PEOPLE!!!

Guinness Factory!

Enjoying our free Guinness at the Gravity Bar!

So, the rest of the night was a little bit nuts.  We went to a handful of pubs.  There were so many people out. It was, pardon my French, a bit of a shit show.  But, I suppose that’s what makes Paddy’s day, huh?
Apart from Paddy’s, been working on some more essays.  Only have two left (one due this Thursday…one due in April).  Going to London this weekend!  DEFINITELY hitting up that Harry Potter tour.  Other than that?  Who knows! haha.
Cheers,
Melanie

No more Leeds exchange? And trip to Dublin!!!

I learned yesterday that Penn State isn’t offering any spots to Leeds students next year, and apparently the only students able to come to Leeds from PSU are AE now. To say I find this incredibly absurd would be an understatement. I’m disappointed in the PSU study abroad team that they did not advocate Leeds more. So many students go to London, which is incredibly expensive, and Leeds is only a couple hours away by train and bus. Leeds is also a big, but student friendly, city. I just don’t understand why PSU hasn’t been advocating Leeds more strongly. Not to mention, the Leeds students I met who came to PSU last year had the time of their lives and are equally as disappointed that no one else can go. But I guess I have no control over any of it so I will just frown and carry on.

Anyway, I went to Dublin last weekend for four days! I went with a Canadian study abroad student who lives on the floor above me. We had a great time exploring Dublin without tours or tour guides and took a day trip to the coast at Howth to climb some cliffs.
