what do you mean I come home in 2 weeks?

As my countdown to home is quickly approaching, even faster approaching are the deadlines for assignments. And I have seen the light at the end of the tunnel – two of my five final assignments were turned in (and might I add before the due dates) TODAY!!! This leaves me with two more turn-ins (one completed and ready to turn in tomorrow, and one still in the works), and a presentation next tuesday, and then its so long England, hello Pittsburgh!

I would be lying if I said I was sad that home was coming soon… seeing as I have been counting down since the first SNOWFALL (YES snowfall… about a week ago) since I am so sad to be missing the Christmas season!!!!! My family and I have been skyping very frequently, planning all the fun things we will do when I get home, which adds to my excitement!
So with about a week of real work and school left, and since I have finished the majority of my work, I am planning to spend my limited days in England doing everything I know I will miss. This Friday, my friends Heather and Becca will accompany me to London for a fun-filled day of Christmas shopping! We plan on going to Harrod’s (a huge department store), a fun toy store we found, and a Christmas market set up in Hyde Park! I am also planning on starting to pack come next week, seeing as I need to figure out how I will fit everything back into my suitcases.
I have decided on Christmas gifts for my host family, and am very anxious for my host mom to see her gift: a certificate for a massage at the spa (with a card that reads: “This massage is surely deserved to relieve you of all the stress of hosting ME for over 3 months! WELL DONE!”) I think she will not only appreciate, but have a good laugh when she reads the card πŸ™‚
So, until next blog, Peace, love and 2 WEEKS!!!!
(Also: I keep trying to upload pictures and unfortunately the internet seems to be chaotic due to the weather and will not allow me to, but next time I get the chance I promise pictures of the alps, my last trip to London, and the SNOW in BOGNOR!!!!)

workaholic…

These past few weeks have just been absolutely jam-packed with work and preparing for assignments, and I find myself losing hours in the day, completely encompassed by my final assignments. This fact alone is quite terrifying, seeing as I cannot believe there is only 3 and a half weeks standing between me and “home for the holidays”. Although my experience in England has been fully exhausted through travel and cultural experiences, I find myself more and more ready to get back on American soil and experience the holiday season with my family and friends. This time of year is hard to be away from home, especially since I am fully aware that most of my friends are home this week for Thanksgiving, and I am not. I do, however, have elegant plans for a pizza and movie night with my friends to celebrate the Turkey Day. It is truly mind-blowing how quickly the semester has gone, and now, with the end of the term quickly approaching, I am buckling down and getting some work done. I recently traveled to my last “overnight” destination, so to speak (I have a few day trips to London planned, to see Wicked and go ice-skating and what not) and I recently returned from a weekend in Switzerland. I traveled alone, and got a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends. I saw some of Swiss Nationals (swimming), saw my old tap teacher, Fabrice, and was fondly reacquainted with chocolates, cheeses and breath-taking mountains. As for returning to Bognor, it was bittersweet. I came back with the satisfaction of a reuniting weekend, but with a certain sadness that I was not going back for a while. Hopefully I will be able to make another trip back in the Spring. I came back to a freezing cold England (we are expecting snow soon!) and was ready to hop back on the work horse and try to appreciate these last few weeks remaining in England. As England comes to a close, however, I begin to look forward to the simple pleasures of home: the Christmas music that awaits me, the cookies and home made meals from Mom, the family, and of course… Olive Garden. Not only have I missed this place more than you can imagine, I have dreamt of it almost every night (just kidding.. but I do miss it!). I also made a very specific request that whoever pick me up at the airport bring a bag full of Panera food, seeing as how it is next to impossible to find salad and soup in England!

Anyways… to summarize, my big trips are over, I only have a few more day trips planned, assignment deadlines are coming up fast, and before I know I’ll be home for the holidays and back off again to SWEDEN!!! πŸ™‚
I promise to post some pictures of the Alps in my next blog, however at the moment it will not allow me to upload pictures, so until next time… peace, love, and happy holidays.

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks!

Ok, so I have literally been running around Europe for the past 2 weeks or so (we have been on half term break)… As promised, let me start with some lovely photos from my Parisian adventure:

Now, the next exciting this to occur after Paris was the visit from my parents! My dad had a business meeting scheduled in London so my Mom flew along and they came down to Bognor to visit me! Thursday of that week I got the chance to show them around the town, the university and my homestay location. Then (almost) the entire group of CIRT students went out to lunch so that my parents could meet everyone! We went to Fox’s, a delicious pub near the university, and had an awesome time! That night, my parents and I went to dinner with my host family at a Spanish restaurant called “Sen”. We had a lovely tapas style dinner and enjoyed getting to know each others families!! That night, my parents and I drove to a hotel near the gatwick airport (brand new built right on the edge of a horse racing track) and got about 5 hours of sleep before we took a cab and plane the next morning to Edinburgh, Scotland!
We spent 3 days in Edinburgh, shopping, seeing the sights and spending time together. It was such a treat to get to see my parents while being abroad! We saw the Edinburgh Castle, the royal palace in Scotland, the pubs, the shopping strips, the old village, and many other tourist sites. We had wonderful meals (one night we went to a delicious Italian restaurant called “La Bruschetta” and ate one of the best meals I have ever had!) There were also plenty of Starbucks to keep me sane :). I had an extremely special treat as well, to meet up with two of my friends from middle school (The International School of Lausanne in Switzerland) who now both currently attend the University of Edinburgh. I met up with Bianca and Henri for dinner and reminiscing, where we spent most of the night in Henri’s bouncy castle (yes… he has a bouncy castle in his flat. it was incredible.) Overall, I think the trip with my parents was my favorite trip yet!

I bid farewell to my parents, with the promises of seeing them in 2 short months for Christmas, and immediately began packing for my next adventure… a 6 day trip through Ireland and Scotland during half term. We left late Thursday night and arrived in Dublin, ready to begin a new adventure. The following day, my friend Jen and I met a soccer team from Italy, explored the town, and conveniently met up with the rest of the group to join in on a free tour of the city. Alas, the tour, we found out, was destined to be 3 hours long and realizing that the Gilligan’s Island tour was also the same length, some friends and I did not want to risk a similar fate, so we skipped out early. Jen, Heather and I explored the city more on our own, and ended up at the Guinness factory. We took a tour, tasted Guinness, realized how absolutely terrible it tasted, and continued on in hopes of finding our friends for dinner. We did, and spent the night listening to traditional Irish music in traditional Irish pubs. The next day, our large group of 14 split into 3 smaller groups. In my group was myself, Heather, and two of the Swedish boys, Isak and Erik. We rented a car in Dublin and once we picked up the “dream machine” we made the rash and spontaneous decision to drive clear to the northern coast of Ireland to see Giant’s Causeway, the northern shore, and torture Erik with about 11 hours total of driving in one day. That night, we stopped for Domino’s pizza and continued down toward Galway, where we spent the evening and the next day. Then we began out drive back toward Dublin, where we stopped along the way to see the Cliffs of Moher, some castles, and occasionally eat. The next night, we flew from Dublin to Glasgow on the smallest plane ever invented by man (I literally thought we were going down every time the plane moved… I was utterly petrified. At the start of the flight the stewardess asked a few rows of people to move to the back so the plane would be BALANCED :-O!!!) When we arrived in Glasgow, I began breathing again and we spent the next two days driving through the Highlands of Scotland, trecking through rain storms, and JUST missing about every single tourist site by no more than 5 minutes. We had quite an adventure and were very ready to return home and actually do some work for a change πŸ™‚

ROOMIES! Heather and I at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland near Galway!
Last night, we celebrated Heather (my roommate’s) 21st birthday at a Halloween Party in downtown Bognor. We went to our favorite pub, William Hardwicke (now called Willywicks for short), and I dressed up as a nerd. I ended up adding dance moves to my costume, and won a free dinner for 2 (plus dessert) for being best dressed!!!

Now, being more than half way done with our term, I am sitting in my room thinking of all the exciting things I have done in a mere month and a half. I am sitting here (and don’t plan on moving for a while seeing as I took two classes at the gym this morning and seemed to have lost the ability to move my legs) realizing that the time goes by faster every day, and I am thrilled to have had the opportunities that I’ve had thus far. I have one more trip planned for a weekend (I will be traveling to Switzerland to reunite with some old friends) and I also plan on doing a few day trips into London and Oxford, but for the most part my traveling has calmed down and I can really start focusing on school. Until next blog, peace, love, and CIRT.

time to myself

With all the orientation programs and group activities, this is pretty much the first chance I’ve had to myself to reflect on the first week of england. In short, I’m in love. This country, especially the Bognor Regis area, is so friendly and laid back, it’s as if I’m on a vacation!

Although this place is beautiful with plenty of adventures ahead, I sit in my room listening to my country music playlist, missing the comfort and security I felt at home in Pittsburgh. I am always up for new things, but it can be scary and unsettling being a foreigner in a new country.
All of my CIRT program friends are a wonderful support group and we all get along so well. It has been awesome getting to know the students from Sweden and England who will be joining us in our 2 year world travels, and I am so anxious for them to see Penn State and experience America in the best way they possibly can.
As for my luggage, it fit through the door as well as in the “boot” of the car!! Truly, I was shocked. Both my suitcases were too heavy for regular pricing, but every girl should know that you cannot leave your shoes behind, they are simply too important!
On a side note from the study abroad corner in Bognor Regis, I certainly hope everyone abroad from PSU right now is having the time of their lives and look forward to hearing stories of our world voyages. To all who are reading, be well, stay safe, and enjoy yourselves!
Until my next blog: Peace, love, and ENGLAND! πŸ™‚

packing is hard…

So I am only allowed to take two suitcases with me on my trip to England, and I am sitting here in a pile of shoes trying to narrow down the pairs but it doesn’t seem to be working. Packing is hard. I am terrified of even starting on clothes considering I may not have room for them with all the uggs, sneakers and heels I plan on taking. Oh well… at least London has great shopping! haha. Anyways, the summer has just flown by and I can’t believe that in about 3 weeks I will be on my way to seeing the world.

Of course I plan on visiting PSU a few more times before I leave considering how much I will miss it, but I am so excited to get my trip started! To all of you who have begun your travels hopefully everything is working out perfectly and it is the time of your life, and to those, like me, who are still panicking about packing, don’t worry! Everything always has a way of working out in the end, so that is why I have taken my fourth break of the day to write this blog (I have faith that my packing will come along just fine… although I am sure that it will have to wait until the day before I leave!).
Until my arrival in Bognor Regis… peace, love, and PENN STATE!

What’s Up

What’s up fellow GeoBloggers? I’m Kristen McKnight, and I am the die hard Pens fan wearing the jersey in the back of the room. GO PENS! I am, therefore, obviously from Pittsburgh, PA, but have not always lived there. I was born there, then moved to Switzerland for 4 years (already a world traveler!), then to Connecticut and finally back to the good ol’ burgh. I am a sophomore Elementary Education major, and am participating in the CIRT program next year through the College of Education. I will be traveling to Bognor Regis, England for fall semester, and Jonkoping, Sweden in the spring. I;m super psyched and ready to go. I think I have already figured out how everything is going to work for me next year, except how to pack! Knowing me, I’ll want to take everything I own, but I’d never be allowed on the plane with 18 suitcases… so that should be exciting.

Anyways, I am planning on having a happily ever after movie experience, but I’ll keep you posted on how real that imagined reality turns out to be πŸ™‚

Pumped to get to know you all through the internet in a non-creepy way.

Peace, love, and Penn State!
