Another Fast Food (Part 2/2)

So here comes, another post on fast food places in Melbourne City! I hope you guys are excited. But even if you don’t, please bear with it. I assure you that this is going to be my last post on this boring topic. So, let’s get to it!

The other day, I stopped by another Japanese fast food place called “Hanaichi” for the first time. It’s located at the heart of Melbourne inside one of the famous shopping center: Queen Victoria. In comparison to Don Don (the other Japanese fast food place I mentioned on my other post), this place is pretty big and you will not have a hard time trying to find a place to sit and eat in. I ordered the medium size Pork Curry. It’s basically crispy fried pork cutlets served with white rice, red pickles and curry sauce.  It was a six-dollars-and-seventy-cents of tasty curry!  The size itself was pretty big for something that they called ‘medium size’.

The second time I went to Hanaichi (yes, I’ve been there twice now), I got their Beef Yakiniku (A$6.90). It’s a little bit too sweet for me, maybe because I personally don’t like sweet taste. However, the stir fried beef was good. The thin sliced beef wasn’t overcooked nor undercooked. It was tender, yet there is no apparent blood or anything. It was served on top of white rice and garnished with bean sprouts, yellow pickles, shallot and coriander.

Alright, now let’s move on another fast food place called “Nando’s.” They have a lot of branches around the city making it very convenient. Nando’s is very well known for its spicy grilled Chicken because they use the  Peri-Peri, a type of chili from Africa. The restaurant itself turned out to be from Johannesburg, South Africa. And yes, Johannesburg is a metropolitan city that is very well known as the richest city in South Africa! I went there with a friend of mine. I and my friend ordered the Half Flame Grilled Chicken with french fries and mashed potatoes as the sides. Nando’s allows you to choose the sauce yourself. The choices are: lemon and herb, Mild Peri-Peri Sauce, Hot Peri-Peri sauce, or Extra Hot Peri-Peri Sauce. At that time, I chose the Extra Hot one just because I love chili so much. My friend got the medium one. I cannot give much comment about the chicken, it was just good (not too dry). The chili sauce, however, was amazing. It’s not as hot as I expected it to be, but it has a strong taste! It costs about twenty seven bucks, but the size was super big, so it’s worth it!

I don’t want to make this post too long, but I really really want to mention McDonald’s one more time cos when I stopped by that place yesterday, I ordered something that States’ McDonald’s doesn’t have and it was pretty amazing. It’s the “Serious Lamb Burger”. The lamb was awesome, juicy and well marinated, I would say. The burger was served with cooked egg, red onions, a slice of cheese, tomato, and lettuce. The size was super big, it’s bigger than other Maccas burger. And no, I failed at finishing it up myself just because it’s way too big and ‘heavy’ for me: This burger costs me A$7.95.

Alright, I will stop now before I bore you guys to death:| Cheers!

Daily Things

Alright, so last week was a pretty hectic week. I had an online test and also two papers to write. That is why I haven’t been posting anything last week. So, here come my two posts:) Well, another one that I will post shortly is on, as I promised, Melbourne’s fast food. It’s the second and the last post about fast food, I promise.

On this post, I will be rambling about random stuffs that I noticed are different from that of States.

The people of Melbourne are very fashionable, I would say. You can’t simply find a person walking around in hoodies and sweatpants, and yes, even in campus. Almost everyone looks nice and neat everywhere.  And, I personally, love it and think that this is something inspiring.

Melbourne is also a place that is very well known for its coffee shops. There are just tons of coffee shops around the city and even on my campus. I, myself, am a big fan of coffee and I actually aim to try every single coffee shop in Melbourne while I’m staying here.  I would probably write a post or two on that later on since I’ve only been to seven coffee shops so far.

One last thing I wanna mention on this blog is the fact that here you have to always have cash with you! You cannot always use your debit or credit card because there is a minimum limit before you are allowed to use your card. During the first few days of my stay, I’ve often panicked because I used to always use card when paying for something, even for a two dollars candy.

So, I guess that’s all for today’s post, I’ll write some more for you guys next time! Cheers.

Australian Fast Food (Part 1/2)

Fast food is always lovely. It doesn’t take much time to be prepared and if they are good, they can be pretty tasty too! I am not a big fan of fast food or anything, but I thought it would be interesting if I write some reviews on the fast food business here in Melbourne since I need to eat some ‘fast food’ now and then, especially if I am late for lecture!

The McDonald’s across the Hibbs Hall is one of the places where I usually go to for a very-late-dinner after doing some insanely hard homework at 2 a.m. in Fenske Lab. Many people have told me that McDonald’s in different country has different set of menu. When I came to one of the “Yellow Arches” stores here in Melbourne, I immediately spotted three differences between the McDonald’s here in Melbourne and there in States. The 24 hours Macca’s here don’t have free soda refill. Also they sell waffle. And, they have ‘Sydney Stack’!  Honestly, I was quite disappointed knowing that free soda refill is not really a ‘habit’ here. But well, I am not really a soda drinker so that’s good. By the way, Macca’s is how the locals usually address McDonald’s and when I asked my friend why, she said it’s just to shorten it. As we know (or not), people here love to shorten words. Anyway back to the Macca’s!

There was nothing special from the waffle, but the ‘Sydney Stack’ was quite unique. It had a beef patty, three slices of bacon, some lettuce, cheese, tomato, pickles, pineapple, and beetroot. It’s topped with BBQ sauce allowing the burger to leave a sweet taste in my mouth. It’s pretty bloody tasty.

Now, let’s move on to a pretty famous Asian fast food located in the heart of Melbourne city. The place is called Don Don. It’s a Japanese fast food restaurant that sells curry, teriyaki, and some other Japanese foods except sushi.  This place gives you a totally new experience. It is literally a FAST food restaurant. You get in there, you order your food, you give your money and you get your food. When I came there, the food was even ready before I actually got my change.  It was less than half a minute that I actually got out from the restaurant and had a delicious tofu curry on my hand.

The tofu curry was served on top of fibrous white rice. It had a thick slice of carrot, a piece of cauliflower, some sliced pickled radish and two pieces of tofu. The curry itself was plentiful.  I devoured this delicious tofu curry in about fifteen minutes and was literally full with just $5.90. In Australia, you don’t simply get a lunch with six bucks. Well, except the two-dollars menu from Maccas which only offers you small French Fries and Cheese Burger!

Oh another rare thing that you would encounter in Don Don: red napkins! 🙂

I guess I’ll stop here for now, I’ll continue with more pretty darn yummy fast food on my next post!

Cheers!

University of Melbourne

Today, I want to share couple things that you should expect if you are traveling to Melbourne (Australia) and also some experience I got so far from the University of Melbourne. First, the weather; the weather here is not as cold as Penn. Since I arrived here, which was early July, the coldest that I’ve ever experienced is only 3 degree Celsius, while as we know, State College can reach -20 degree Celsius. So it’s quite nice here. However, expect the unexpected rain and wind!

The city overall is very enjoyable. The main transportation we use here is trams, even though they also have trains and buses. Trams, as we know, are slow, but they are very convenient. Melbourne also allow their people to rent a public bike that they can return at any ‘bike station’. Here are some pictures:

However, beware pedestrian! The cop here fine people for jaywalking and crossing when the red light is blinking. The fine costs about 70 bucks. Yes, it’s pretty high, unfortunately.

Well, so far these are the things that I noticed. Cheers.

SECOND WEEKEND!

So, I probably have to write about my first weekend in Melbourne first. However, I will skip to my second weekend because it seems to be more interesting. But, don’t worry! I will still write about my very first weekend in Melbourne since it will contain a lot of information about stuff and things that you have to expect if you plan to go here:) Now, let’s get going!

This weekend, I went to Phillip Island with four of my friends. I don’t know exactly how far it is from Melbourne, but Mr. Wikipedia said it is about 140 km south-southeast of Melbourne. The only thing I knew was that my friend was driving for two hours (more or less) before we can actually relax and enjoy the beautiful breezy nature there:)
The first place we went to in this island, that apparently was named after a prince, was Pannys Chocolate Factory. YUMMY CHOCOLATE! Isn’t that the first thing that comes to your mind when I mentioned the phrase PANNYS CHOCOLATE FACTORY? :9 We went there and paid A$12 (per person) for the tour inside that place. It was a fun experience. We got to know a lot of interesting facts about chocolate such as the history of chocolate, how chocolate bar is made, where the cacao usually come from, how different cocoa have different smell and texture, etc. Below are couple pictures from the place: (I have a lot more, but I will save it for your surprise when you come and visit yourself)

Well, there will never be enough chocolate for me, but let’s roll to the next place before you all get bored of chocolate. It’s Churchill Island Heritage Farm. This place is more like a nature-admiration-site. This place has a magnificent view of the nature. Below is couple pictures from this place: (again, I have more, but I will save it for you to find it yourself)

In this place, you got to experience and learn about how the Churchill people live and farm. You can milk a cow, ride the wagon, throw boomerang, see sheep shearing, tour the lavender park and enjoy the beauty of different kind of pretty birds! It was an interesting experience for me. Very interesting, I should say:)
Now, last but not least: Penguin Parade in Phillip Island. Yes, we got to see penguins! Well, it wasn’t the regular type of penguins. The penguins here is the species known as “little penguin”. They are small about 10-15 cm tall and they are ADORABLE! It was pretty dark when we got to this place, but it was perfect because the penguins wait for the sun to set before they would come and migrate from the ocean to their ‘house’. Phillip Island is known as home for one of largest little penguin colonies in the world. Unfortunately, I don’t have the pictures of the penguins as it was illegal to take their pictures, but I am putting a Google picture of them (which I don’t know how people got them) below together with the pictures of the place:

That was basically my second Saturday here in Australia. It was a pretty chilly day, there wasn’t really much sun throughout the day, the temperature was about 10 degrees C, but it was a super fun day after all. I got to do many things and relax with couple friends before school actually gets busy.
So that’s that, see you guys in my next blog! Cheers.

From Continent to Continent…

Hello everyone! I’m Angeline and I will be studying at the University of Melbourne in Australia starting this Fall 2012 for the next two semesters. I am super excited!! In about a month from now, I will be leaving my home country for MELBOURNE, one of the coolest cities in Australia (do you know that it is the birthplace of television in Australia?)

I already have a list of places I want to visit including: Magnetic Island, Ayers Rock, Great Ocean Rock, Tasmania, and Great Barrier Reef. The University of Melbourne itself, I think, will be fun! I will be taking five engineering classes (since I am a chem-e and that on my academic plan, this junior year is the ‘not-so-fun’ year). But! I have an old friend who is actually a student there and is majoring in some chemistry-related major, so we will be having some classes together:)

To be honest, it’s been pretty busy for me since the last couple days. I start to look for place to stay, prepare all the documents to apply for the visa (yes, since I am an Indonesian citizen, there are thousands of documents I have to prepare), and also pack my stuffs. Not to mention that I’m taking online Phase and Chemical Equilibrium and work full time as an intern in one of the largest consumer durable producer in Asia, PT. Maspion.

But, these all are parts of one of the most exciting experience I will ever have in my life, so it’s absolutely worth it!!
