Arriving in Turkey

Merhaba!

I am finally here and what a great way to start a new semester.  I feel like I am exactly where I need to be. Everything is just flowing and I feel good about why I am here and what I am doing.  To be honest, when I got off of the plane, there was a small thought of “what are you doing” that entered my mind momentarily.  Luckily, I realized that it was only my fears and quickly put myself in check.

My taxi driver did not speak English but we communicated very well.  He was very proud of his country and that is very refreshing especially with the political chaos that is everywhere.  I don’t know what I thought Istanbul was going to be like but it was not this.  There is no picture or movie that could convey how beautiful Istanbul is.  You are just going to have to come and see for yourself.  This city is vibrant and vast with lots of people, shopping malls, traffic (horrible), construction, etc.  You name it and Istanbul has it.  It seems as if every inch of Istanbul covered with highways, homes, and commercial property.

The Koc University campus is awesome.  The CIEE faculty and Koc faculty have been wonderful.  One of the cool things about arriving a few days early is you get to meet everyone one on one before the crowd gets here as well as be better prepared.  I got a chance to have lunch with Kathryn, Koray, and Defne (CIEE Faculty).  Even though I did not know what I had it was great along with the company.

I am looking forward to not only learning the Turkish language and culture but also getting to know and learning about myself.  It is all about growth and I am ready for it.  Hopefully, everyone is having a wonderful semester abroad or in the US.

P.S.  Below are some more pictures I took as I arrived in Istanbul and on the Koc campus.  Enjoy!

On Your Mark…Get Set…Uuhh Medic Please!!

Hey one and all!  I don’t know about you but, for me, getting ready to study abroad has been like running in an exciting marathon while having leg cramps, heart attacks, panic attacks, and yummy ice cream breaks on the way to the finish line.  What is going on?  The problem is I got too much done too early (as early as six months ahead of time) that now I am waiting and waiting AND WAITING which is driving me CRAZY and making me more anxious.  I am packed and ready to go but I keep doubting myself and checking the to-do-list over and over again.  On some things, I am normally a procrastinator and I vowed that I would be the early bird this time but all the worms are gone and I have a taste for something else 🙂

In a few days, I will be on my way to Turkey to live the life I have been waiting for for almost a year but I fear that I might have a fatal heart attack before that time comes.  For you guys who have reached or waiting to reach your destinations, how did you survive or are surviving the final weeks before your departure?  Any nail biting or hair pulling?  Or was it peaceful?  Whatever you are doing I hope you are having a wonderful time.  I think I am going to check that to-do-list one more time just to be sure (Ha!)

Introducing…Kimberly Lytle

Merhaba!

I am not going to bore you with the dull stuff so I will keep it short and sweet.  My husband and I currently live in Atlanta, Georgia.  This is my senior year at Penn State WorldCampus.  What an amazing way to finish this chapter of my undergraduate studies which would help carve a new path for me in international affairs as I pursue my law and graduate studies at Penn State next year as well as help get me closer and closer to my dream career as a Foreign Service Officer at the Department of State.

The country I will be studying in for almost a year is Turkey (Istanbul).  So many people have asked me why did I choose Turkey and my reply has always been “why not Turkey”.  I have no expectations for this adventure.  I only plan to open my heart and let Turkey take me where I need go.  I know it sounds a little stupid but it works for me.  Sometimes no plan is the best plan while on the road of discovery.  I want to learn as much as possible about myself, the culture, the history, and its people by actively getting involved with the community through volunteering, socializing, traveling, and sightseeing.  The opportunities are endless and I plan to just dive in even if I belly flop or fall on my face.

I hope everyone has a great time and I look forward to reading your posts and sharing my adventures and what I have learned with you all very soon.
