Expect the Unexpected

I quickly learned after traveling to just a couple of cities that no city is completely how you expected it to be. France was no exception to this rule. Before I went to Paris all that came to mind about the city of love was high fashion, romance, and rude people. While Paris was a very romantic city it has a lot more depth than just being a romantic getaway. Paris boasts wlourveorld famous museums all through out the city. I had the opportunity to visit both the Pompidou and the Louvre. And the best part: both of my visits were free! (You can get in for free by showing a student ID card and an ID card that shows you live in the EU). The Lourve is massive. I think you could spend weeks in there and still not see everything. If you are able to go give yourself a few hours to walk around (and of course time to see the Mona Lisa even though she was named the second most disappointing tourist attraction in the world because of her size).

The architecture in Paris is absolutely breathtaking from the Notre Dame Cathedral to the Eiffel Tower to the Galeries Lafayette (which is a mall!). I would recommend definitely experiencing all the three of the places I just mentioned. While the last is not well known, it has an amazing rooftop view of the city and is the most gorgeous department store you will ever see in your life.

During our trimeandlocksp we stopped at the Love Lock bridge to put up our own locks. We accidentally  put our locks on the wrong bridge (oops!) but turns out that was not such a bad idea since the original bridge had begun falling apart and all of those love locks have been taken down. It is easy to find locks in the tourist shops around Paris especially by the bridge.

Paris is known for its food and after visiting I can see why! The street food especially was amazing. Make sure to get a crepe or two during your visit! There are also many restaurants in Paris but just because Paris may resemble the hustle of New York City during the day it does not at night. Be aware that a lot of things close early in this city. I ate at Le Refuge De Fondues one night in Paris and the food was amazing! They serve steak that you cook yourself on the table and bread with cheese fondue. They also are known for serving wine in baby bottles. It was a great restaurant to go with a group but make sure you have a reservation!

After Paris, we flew to Nice using Easy Jet. You can also take a train to Nice, however, flying niceviewthere worked better with our schedule. Nice is absolutely gorgeous. It boasts a large market in town with delicious fruit and beautiful crafts and paintings. If you like soap you will find lots of handmade soap here especially lavender. Climb up castle hill for a great view of Nice and of its rock beach.

We specifically went to Nice for Carnival in March. The parade was amazing and everyone watching was dressed up. It was a mix of Halloween and Mardis Gra. The parade was much more interactive than any parade I had been to before. People dressed up would enter the crowd. Everyone watching would throw silly string and confetti on friends anicecarnivalnd on the people in the parade. And everyone on the floats was doing the same. The floats were very elaborate and there were a lot of performers walking through the parade too.

First weekend of travel

Last weekend five of us traveled to Nice for an extended weekend. Monday was a national holiday so we were off from school. The trip took about 7 hours and 30 minutes total with 30 minute stop in Marseilles. We booked our tickets a little late and, as a result, had no assigned seat on the train to Marseilles. We were floaters; we sat wherever there was an empty seat. I was lucky and did not have to move at all for the trip but most of the other PSU students had to move around at each stop.
TGV to Mersailles.JPGWe had bought snacks for the train ride because we knew it would be long but when we arrived in Marseilles, we bought sandwiches at the train station (we needed more than pretzels and granola bars.) We took 5 minutes to step outside the train station and take pictures of Marseilles and wonder if we should have stayed in Marseilles instead of continuing on to Nice.

Nice was beautiful. It has rocky beaches, clear blue water, plenty of sun. Our first night at the hostel we met a group of students from American University. One of the girls in the group happened to go to high school with one of the girls in our group so we all went out together. We wondered the Nice’s old city looking for a dance club. The only one we found that looked like fun ended up being a gay bar and we were denied entrance. Instead we went to an Irish pub for a drink and walked back to the hostel.

Old City Nice.JPGSaturday was spent in Monaco, I really did not pack well for that trip; it was extremely hot and all I had were capris and a tee-shirt. However, I saw some amazing boats and cars – including a Bugatti – while in Monaco as well as the Monte Carlo Casino. The houses were beautiful and I found peanut butter in their supermarket. (France does not have a lot of peanut butter. I cannot find it in Besancon.)

Saturday night we went out with two girls that we met at Free Champagne Night at the hostel. We asked the front desk were the best place to party was and they directed us to Wayne’s Bar which is an Irish bar that has live music. During their night hours, the bar employees push the tables against the walls and so people can stand and dance on them. The place becomes so packed with people no one can move without push someone. I tend to be claustrophobic and could not stay in the bar but everyone else had a great time.

Waynes Bar.jpgSunday, we spent the day on the beach. We stopped at a Monoprix first thing in the morning to buy some drinks, bread, and cheese, then walked to the beach. only a small section of the beach actually has sand on it, the rest is pebbles. We laid our towels out, put on sunscreen, and basked in the warmth. I have to saw, the Mediterranean Sea is much colder than I would have expected it to be. It was like swimming at Ocean City, NJ only cleaner and clearer.
Beach in Nice.jpgFor dinner, we wandered back down to the old section of Nice to get dinner. All of us wanted seafood for dinner. We splurged for dinner and went to a relatively expensive place, but the food was great, and the portions were huge so it was worth it.

After dinner, we went back to Wayne’s Bar for our last night in Nice. We all ordered drinks and hung out for a while before the crowd came again. I left when they began pushing the tables against the wall and packing people into the bar.

Monday we checked out of our hostel, stored our baggage and visited some of the tourist attractions. Nice has a man-made waterfall at the top of what seemed like a million stairs. It was beautiful – you could see the whole city from the top. after some of us walked to see some ancient ruins while others (me included) enjoyed some air conditioning in one of Nice’s malls. After we met up at the hostel, grabbed dinner, and collected our baggage for the long train ride back to Besancon.

French Riviera

Ciao Tutti,

I again apologize, but I am posting this a week after I wrote it.  I wrote this blog entry on my iPad on my way back from the French Riviera and just remembered I never posted it.

—————————————————-

I’d like to start off with a big congratulations to all those involved with THON 2011.  I can’t believe we raised $9.56 million – completely skipping the $8 million dollar mark!  While I was disappointed I was not able to be there when the final tally was raised, I can assure you that all the Penn Staters’ from IES Rome were celebrating!  Apparently, this must be an annual occurance because my Italian roommate, Silvio, knew what THON was and how to make a diamond with his fingers.  Like they say, Penn State travels well!

On a more general note, I am definitely settling into life in Rome, Italy (or Europe in general). After spending last weekend in Florence, I had a relatively easy week of classes.  It is nice to have a four day week while studying abroad because the week flies by and it is the weekend before you know it.

On Monday, my roommates and I went to our friends’ apartment for dinner.  We all had a great time and played a few games of Scopa afterwards, an Italian card game (very similar to Spades or Hearts).  Our team won in blowout fashion – 23-3.

On Tuesday, for the second week in a row, I went to Tratteria Night.  It is a dinner sponsored by IES at a local restaurant.  It’s open to 15 students a week.  The students pay €10 each and IES covers the rest of the cost.  The food is phenomenal!  It is a seven course meal – bruscetta, grilled vegetables, pizzettes (fried dough with pizza sauce and parmigian cheese on top), potato soup, spaghetti with tomato sauce, penne with pesto sauce, and tirimasu.  They also provide a at least eight liters of wine for the table and all the water you want.  Not a bad deal for €10!  At the end of the night you walk away full and with a few new friends.  I sat next to an ISC (Italian student) and we spoke in Italian for the duration of dinner.  I was very pleased with myself.  Even though I only speak Italian in my apartment, it was great to speak to someone new.

This weekend, I booked a last minute trip to the French Riviera with Euroadventures.  We left on Thursday night out of Florence (I had to take a train from Florence to Rome) and had a great time.  It was about a five hour bus ride to our hostel in Nice.

On Friday, our tour group took a train to Monaco – the richest country of the world and the home of the world famous Monte Carlo Casino.  We were able to see a Ferari dealership.  I’m not much of a car guy, but it was really cool.  After the car dealership, we went to the harbor and took pictures of multi-million dollar yachts.  Then, we climbed up a cliff about 500 feet high for great views.  We saw the Price of Monaco’s palace and went into Jaque Cousteau’s aquarium.  Then, we descended the cliff and tried our luck in Monte Carlo.  It cost €10 to get in, but it was well worth it.  I can now say that the first casino I ever gambled in was the Monte Carlo.  I also won €10.07, so I covered my cover charge and still walked out up .07 cents.  I can also say that I won in the Monte Carlo.  Not a bad day! Monaco is, by far, the most beautiful place I have ever been.  I hope that I will be able to afford to come back one day!

On

Saturday, we went to Cannes – home of the famous film festival.  It was another beautiful city, but it is hard to imagine how crazy it is during the film festival!  We walked to the harbor and saw more yachts.  They were so beautiful!  Saturday night was the huge Carnivale parade in Nice.  This was a great experience!  The floats were amazing, but they were easily overshadowed by the atmosphere of the crowd.  Kids (and some adults) were dressed up in costumes that we would wear for Haloween.  The crazier thing, though, were the silly string and confetti wars.  No one was safe, but no one was innocent.  I was attacked by parade goers from 2 years old to 80 years old.  By the end of the night, I was covered in a mix of confetti and silly string from head to toe!  In my opinion, Mardi Gras simply cannot compete with Carnivale.

On Sunday, we explored Nice.  It truly is a beautiful city.  I can’t even imagine what it is like in the middle of the summer!  On the way back to Florence, we stopped in a Mideval town built into the side of a cliff called Enz.

I am so happy with my decision to travel to the French Riviera.  It wasn’t originally on my bucket list of places to go, but I will remember this weekend for the rest of my life.  It was beautiful and a great experience.  The views were absolutely breathtaking!  The food was great – I had 3 crepes, 2 croissants , and 2 pastries.  It all tasted amazing! I truly had a great experience this weekend and met a lot of great people.

Arrividerci,
Mike
