A Picture is worth…

Jamaica_P1.jpg

They say a picture is worth a thousand words all I have been able to think to say is that, I wake up to this. Even with the millions of Mosquito bites and presently fighting a temperature on top of the high temperature and humidity of Jamaica.

WE ARE…..

Well we are about six days into this program and we have just been completely immersed in organic farming and ideas of sustainability as it relates to culture, day to day living, family, and whatever else you can imagine. Thus far we have seen hillside farming (actually it was a mountain approximately 28 – 30 degree slope) and flat lands farming sites. I have sen both organic farming and that which is very close to it. My group is staying at a Organic farm and Sustainble site called “Durga’s Den”, I’m living in a cabin made of reused materials and all is well. The learning expeiernce is not built or blocked into certain hours, everything we do is apart of the learning experience. WE ARE….living the sustainable lifestyle and learning much from it at the same time.

Home of good people and Great vibes

Hello All,

I touched down in Jamaica yesterday around 1pm (2pm EST). The Island is beautiful. The people are great. Living so close to the ocean is such an amazing thing. Though it brings a different type of danger. Yesterday after lading in Montego Bay, I witnessed a group of pre-teens gather a bunch of Sea urchins and kill them with rocks. It wasn’t out of fun or to just be malicious but the young men were trying to protect there family and friends. Have you ever step of a stepped on a Sea urchin while playing at a beach? Believe me it is NOT something you want to endure. Being here less than 24 hours has already shown me different side of survival, I’m used to the discussion on survival tactics as it relates to people but to add the element of nature is something many of us aren’t ready for.

One Week until Jamaica

Well it is getting close to the date we leave for our study aboard in Jamaica. The anticipation is definitely building. I can’t wait to get there and see what I am getting myself into. I have no idea what living in a self-sustaining community will be like but if it is anything like the image I have in my head I am in for a great learning experience.

Preparing for Jamaica

Well it is safe to say that I am both excited and nervous about heading to Jamaica this July. After years of financial struggles I’ll finally be able to study abroad somewhere. I’m truly looking forward to the overall experience of living in a sustainable community. As a native born American we take so much for granted and through the years I have noticed it. I want to see if I can really live off the land and not be wasteful with the things that have been made accessible to me and the many citizens of the USA.

This 4-5 weeks session in Jamaica will be something I’ve looked forward to since the beginning of the Spring semester and maybe even longer than that. I look forward to writing about my experiences and the adventures the courses will take us on. Time is winding down and I will be in Jamaica soon. until next time.
Blessings,
